Port of Goma (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

The Port of Goma is the vital logistical artery of the North Kivu province, situated on the northern shore of Lake Kivu at an altitude of approximately 1,463 meters. It serves as the primary gateway for passenger and cargo traffic between Goma and Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu. Given that road connections in the region are often insecure or impassable, the waterway provides the safest and most efficient means of transport. Daily operations include modern speedboats and large barges carrying agricultural goods such as beans, maize, and potatoes, as well as construction materials. The port is managed by the state railway company SNCC, which maintains operations despite the unique challenges posed by the volcanic activity of the nearby Mount Nyiragongo. The facility was partially damaged by lava during the 2002 eruption but has since been progressively rebuilt and expanded. Today, it stands as a symbol of local economic resilience and is an indispensable hub for cross-border trade with neighboring Rwanda.
