Mount Tshiaberimu (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Mount Tshiaberimu is an extinct volcano located within the Virunga National Park, in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Reaching 3,097 meters, it is a smaller but ecologically critical peak within the Virunga volcanic chain. The mountain is particularly renowned for the isolated population of Grauer's gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri) that inhabits its slopes, known as the Tshiaberimu gorillas. This group is geographically separated from other Grauer's gorilla populations, making them genetically unique but also exceptionally vulnerable. The vegetation on Tshiaberimu ranges from dense montane forests at lower elevations to sub-alpine heathlands and grasslands near the summit. This habitat gradient supports a diverse flora and fauna, including several species endemic to the Albertine Rift. The main threats to this fragile ecosystem are poaching, deforestation for charcoal production, and agricultural encroachment, which are exacerbated by instability in the region. Intensive conservation measures by park rangers and international organizations are crucial for the survival of the Tshiaberimu gorillas and the protection of their unique habitat.
