Svatá Hora Pilgrimage Site (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Svatá Hora (Holy Mountain) near Příbram is one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in Central Europe and a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Its history dates back to the 13th century, when local silver miners built a simple chapel on the hill. The site's major expansion into a magnificent monastic complex began in the 17th century after it was acquired by the Jesuits, who commissioned architects like Carlo Lurago for the design. The centerpiece is the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by a square cloister with richly decorated chapels and corner towers. In 1732, the ceremonial coronation of the Virgin Mary statue took place, cementing the site's high religious status. Svatá Hora survived the Josephine reforms and remained a symbol of faith even during the communist era. Its opulent interior, featuring silver altars and intricate frescoes, marks it as a site of international artistic importance.
