Písek is located in South Bohemia on the Otava River and is primarily famous for being home to the oldest surviving stone bridge in the Czech Republic. The city was founded in the 13th century by the Bohemian kings and takes its name from the river sand (písek) from which gold was once panned. Its historical center features the Gothic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the remnants of the former royal castle. For centuries, Písek served as a vital administrative and educational hub for the Prácheňsko region. The stone bridge, often compared to Prague's Charles Bridge, dates back to the second half of the 13th century and is adorned with Baroque sculptures. Today, the city is a significant cultural destination known for its museums, art galleries, and scenic riverside promenade. The surrounding South Bohemian landscape, with its characteristic ponds and forests, provides good conditions for relaxation and tourism.
