Zbiroh Castle (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Zbiroh Castle, often called the 'Castle of Three Emperors', is situated on a unique jasper rock outcrop between Prague and Pilsen. Established in the late 12th century as an early Gothic fortress, it became a favored residence for monarchs such as Charles IV, Sigismund of Luxembourg, and Rudolf II. One of its most extraordinary features is the castle well, which at 163 meters deep, is considered the deepest in Europe, hand-cut into the solid rock. The chateau underwent a major Neo-Renaissance reconstruction in the late 19th century, giving it a majestic palatial appearance. Zbiroh is also internationally renowned as the former residence of Art Nouveau master Alfons Mucha, who lived here from 1910 to 1928 while painting his monumental 'Slav Epic' cycle. The castle's history took a secretive turn in the 20th century when it was seized by the SS and later used by the Czechoslovak military as a high-security signals intelligence station, only opening to the public in 2004.
