Orlík Castle (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Orlík Castle stands on a prominent rocky outcrop overlooking the Vltava River and was originally founded as an early Gothic fort in the 13th century. Its name is derived from the word for 'eagle' (orel), referencing its original high position above a deep river valley, resembling an eagle's nest. The construction of the Orlík Dam in the 1950s dramatically altered the landscape, as the rising water level now reaches the castle's base. Since the 18th century, the castle has been associated with the Schwarzenberg family, who renovated it in the romantic Neo-Gothic style. The opulent interiors house extensive collections of weapons, medals, and personal artifacts belonging to Field Marshal Karl Philipp of Schwarzenberg, known for his victory over Napoleon at Leipzig. Today, the castle is back in the private ownership of the family and serves as a major cultural destination. A sprawling landscape park with roaming peacocks and historic avenues surrounds the residence.
