Chomutov is a historic city located at the foot of the Ore Mountains in the northwestern part of the Czech Republic. First mentioned in 1252, it became a significant seat for the Teutonic Knights, which shaped much of its early urban development and architecture. The historical center features a spacious town square with the early Gothic Church of St. Catherine and a magnificent Renaissance town hall. A globally unique natural phenomenon found here is the Alum Lake (Kamencové jezero); due to its high alum content, the water is so sterile that no algae or fish can survive in it, making it a popular spot for swimming. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Chomutov was a prominent hub for coal mining and heavy industry, though it has since pivoted towards tourism and leisure. The Chomutov Zoo is the largest in the country by area, focusing specifically on Eurasian fauna. The surrounding mountains offer excellent opportunities for winter sports and hiking in the pristine forests of the Krušné hory.
