Rumburk is located in the northernmost part of Bohemia in the Šluknov Hook area, directly on the border with Saxony. First documented in 1298, the town flourished as a major hub for linen trade and textile production due to its strategic position on key trade routes. A masterpiece of Baroque art, the Loreta complex remains one of the most beautiful of its kind in Central Europe, built in the early 18th century according to designs by architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. The town is also known for the Rumburk Rebellion of 1918, a significant uprising of Czech soldiers against the Austro-Hungarian military leadership near the end of World War I. The local architecture showcases the former wealth of textile tycoons, featuring numerous grand villas and factory buildings from the 19th-century industrial era. Today, Rumburk is an important regional center and serves as a gateway to the Bohemian Switzerland National Park and the Lusatian Mountains, maintaining strong cross-border ties with neighboring German municipalities.
