Loket

Loket, which means 'elbow' in Czech, is named after the sharp bend of the Ohře River that surrounds the town on three sides. Its centerpiece is the imposing 12th-century Loket Castle, a royal fortress built on a massive granite rock. The castle features a fascinating porcelain museum, a terrifying medieval torture exhibit in its dungeons, and a famous meteorite that fell here in the 15th century. The German poet Goethe was a frequent visitor, often staying at the local inn. The town's fairytale appearance has made it a popular filming location, most notably appearing in the James Bond movie 'Casino Royale.' The historic square is filled with Baroque architecture, a plague column, and colorful facades. A local culinary highlight is the 'pit-roasted pig,' a traditional method of cooking pork underground that is unique to the region. Located just 12 km from Karlovy Vary, Loket is a favorite stop for hikers and rafters on the Ohře River. It is accessible by local train or bus, making it an easy day trip. During the summer, the outdoor amphitheater at the foot of the castle provides a dramatic setting for operas and concerts under the night sky.
