Soos National Nature Reserve (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Soos National Nature Reserve, located near Františkovy Lázně, is a unique geological phenomenon in Europe. Covering 221 hectares, it features extensive peat bogs and mineral mires shaped by carbon dioxide emissions from deep within the earth. A key feature is the presence of mofettes, small mud volcanoes that constantly hiss as they release gases. The landscape is covered with a thick layer of diatomaceous earth, the remains of prehistoric algae from an ancient lake. Due to high salt and mineral concentrations in the soil, a specialized flora has developed here, typically found only in coastal regions. A wooden nature trail guides visitors safely through the fragile bog environment, offering insights into the region's post-volcanic activity. The reserve also includes a paleontology museum and a rescue station for injured wildlife. Due to its bizarre and barren beauty, Soos is often referred to as 'Czech Iceland'.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this unique geological nature reserve is generally straightforward, with the main access points located just a short distance from the spa town of Františkovy Lázně.
📅
Best season
Late spring through early autumn is typically the most suitable time to observe the bubbling mofettes, as freezing winter temperatures can make the mud phenomena less visible.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The reserve features well-maintained wooden boardwalks specifically designed to carry visitors safely over the fragile peat bogs, making the walking paths flat and easily accessible.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for the boardwalks, along with a camera to capture the surreal, lunar-like landscape and the unusual mud volcano formations.

Parking
Dedicated parking areas are usually situated close to the main reserve entrance, accommodating visitors who drive directly from the surrounding West Bohemian towns.
⚠️
