Karviná, located in the easternmost part of Czech Silesia on the border with Poland, is a city defined by its dramatic industrial evolution and aristocratic heritage. Its historical heart is the Fryštát district, home to the elegant Empire-style Fryštát Chateau and its extensive English landscape park. A world-famous curiosity of the city is the 'Leaning Church' of St. Peter of Alcantara, which tilted by nearly seven degrees due to ground subsidence caused by intense coal mining, a steeper incline than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Despite its 20th-century reputation as a mining powerhouse, Karviná has a significant spa tradition; the Darkov Spa is renowned for its iodine-bromine saline waters used to treat musculoskeletal disorders since 1867. In recent years, the city has focused on reclaiming its landscape from the effects of heavy industry, developing new parks and recreational zones. Today, Karviná serves as an important cultural and educational link in the border region and is home to several faculties of the Silesian University.
