Kokořín Castle (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Kokořín Castle, set among the sandstone cliffs of the Kokořínsko region, is one of the most iconic castles in the Czech Republic. It was built around 1320 by Hynek Berka of Dubá as a strategic fortress. Heavily damaged during the Hussite Wars, it was placed on the list of "cursed castles" in the 16th century by imperial decree, forbidding its repair so it could not provide shelter for rebels. The castle fell into ruins and inspired many Romantic poets and painters in the 19th century. Its current appearance is due to a comprehensive reconstruction between 1911 and 1918 by the Špaček family, who rebuilt it in an idealized Romantic style. With its prominent cylindrical tower and defensive walkway, it provides a look at medieval architecture through the lens of early 20th-century preservation. The complex is regarded as a masterpiece of Czech heritage restoration from that era.
