St. George Rotunda on Říp (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Rotunda of St. George and St. Adalbert atop Mount Říp is one of the oldest and most significant Romanesque monuments in the Czech Republic. Mount Říp itself holds a central place in Czech mythology as the legendary spot where Forefather Čech first looked out and decided to settle his people. The current stone structure was built in 1126 by Duke Soběslav I to commemorate his victory over German King Lothair III at the Battle of Chlumec. It replaced an earlier wooden structure and has undergone several restorations that meticulously preserved its original Romanesque form. The interior features a simple circular nave with a semi-circular apse and a tall cylindrical tower. Every April, the site hosts major pilgrimages that reinforce the mountain's role as a symbol of national identity. From the summit, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the Bohemian countryside, reinforcing the spiritual and historical gravity of this iconic site.
