Bezděz Castle (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Bezděz Castle is one of the most important Gothic castle complexes in the Czech Republic, majestically overlooking a phonolite mountain in Northern Bohemia. It was built between 1264 and 1278 by King Ottokar II Přemysl as a royal residence and to secure the territory. The architecture is a prime example of early Gothic style, characterized by the use of local materials and a strict, defensive structure. The castle also became famous as the place of imprisonment for King Wenceslaus II, who was held here with his mother after his father's death. Following a turbulent history as a monastery in the 17th century, the facility fell into ruin and became a symbol of Czech Romanticism in the 19th century, inspiring poets such as Karel Hynek Mácha. Despite destruction during the Thirty Years' War, key parts such as the castle chapel and the 40-meter-high observation tower have been preserved. Today, Bezděz features not only deep insights into medieval fortification art but also one of the widest panoramic views over the Bohemian landscape.
