Benátky nad Jizerou is located approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Prague in the Jizera River valley. The history of the town dates back to the 13th century, with the settlement of Obodř officially receiving town status in 1346. The most prominent historical landmark is the Benátky Chateau, originally a Gothic fortress later rebuilt into a magnificent Renaissance and Baroque residence. In 1599, the chateau served as an observatory for the world-renowned Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, who stayed here under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II. Later, the famous composer Bedřich Smetana also spent time at the chateau, working as a music teacher for the Thun noble family. Today, the chateau houses a regional museum and a unique Toy Museum, which showcases one of the most extensive collections of historical toys in the Czech Republic. The town is also recognized for its viticulture tradition, which dates back to the 16th century and represents one of the northernmost wine regions in Bohemia.
