The Jizera Mountains (Jizerské hory) are a scenic mountain range in the north of the Czech Republic, on the border with Poland. They are known for their gentle peaks, extensive plateaus with peat bogs, and dense beech forests, which are protected as a National Nature Reserve. The highest peak on the Czech side is Smrk (1.124 m), on top of which there is a lookout tower. The mountains are the source area for several rivers, including the Jizera River, which gave the mountains their name. The Jizera Mountains are criss-crossed by a dense network of hiking and cycling trails in summer, and in winter are famous for the 'Jizera Artery' (Jizerská magistrála), a network of over 200 km of groomed cross-country skiing tracks, making it a paradise for cross-country skiers. Numerous granite rocks and rock formations also offer opportunities for climbers. The region is also known for its traditional glassmaking.

Getting there
These mountains are typically accessed from gateway cities like Liberec or Jablonec nad Nisou. A scenic network of well-maintained local roads generally leads directly to the primary forest entry points.
Best season
Summer and autumn are usually excellent for hiking and extensive cycling along the mountain plateaus. Winter regularly provides superb snow conditions, making it a highly renowned area for cross-country skiing.
Terrain & paths
The terrain is distinctly marked by broad, relatively flat plateaus with extensive peat bogs, interspersed with large granite rock formations. Many main trails are typically paved or smoothly surfaced.
What to bring
Sturdy waterproof footwear is heavily advised, as the trails near the peat bogs can often be damp. Cyclists generally benefit from bringing specialized repair kits for long, remote rides across the plateau.
Parking
Official parking areas are usually situated on the edges of the nature reserve, such as in Bedřichov. These designated spots typically charge a daily fee and serve as the standard starting points for most routes.
Safety
It is strictly requested that visitors stay on the wooden boardwalks when traversing the highly sensitive peat bog areas. Winter visibility on the expansive plateaus can typically drop drastically during snowstorms.
Time needed
A typical leisurely walk along the central nature trails usually takes about three to five hours. For cycling or cross-country skiing, enthusiasts frequently spend the entire day navigating the extensive trail network.
