Frýdlant in the Jizera Mountains is a historic town in northern Bohemia, with a destiny inseparable from its monumental castle and chateau complex. The first written record dates back to 1278, when the Bieberstein family acquired the territory and expanded the original Gothic fortress. One of the most significant eras in the town's history was under Albrecht von Wallenstein, who made Frýdlant the center of his Duchy of Friedland and boosted the local economy during the Thirty Years' War. The unique dual architectural structure of a medieval castle combined with a grand Renaissance chateau is one of the most visited monuments in the Czech Republic, housing extensive collections of weapons, furniture, and art. The town is divided by the Smědá River and features a well-preserved historic center centered around a monumental Neo-Renaissance town hall built in the late 19th century. Today, Frýdlant serves as an important cultural and administrative regional hub located near the border with Poland.
