Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav is a unique twin city in the Czech Republic, situated on both banks of the Elbe River, northeast of Prague. Stará Boleslav is the oldest and most important pilgrimage site in the country, associated with St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech nation, who was martyred here in 935. Visitors can explore the Basilica of St. Wenceslas and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, central sites of Czech pilgrimage. Across the river, Brandýs nad Labem has a Renaissance chateau, a favorite hunting lodge of the Habsburg emperors. The chateau is beautifully renovated and features sgraffito decorations. The city is a handy place for those interested in history and spirituality. It is easily accessible from Prague by bus or train, making it a great day-trip destination. The best time to visit is in the spring and autumn months, or during the St. Wenceslas pilgrimage in September.
