Church of Archangelos Michael Pedoulas (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Church of Archangelos Michael in the mountain village of Pedoulas is one of the most significant examples of 15th-century religious art in Cyprus. This small, single-aisle place of worship was built in 1474 and is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of painted churches in the Troodos region. The construction was financed by the priest Basil Chamados, whose family is also immortalized in the wall paintings. The exterior of the church is modest, featuring the steep timber roof typical of the region, which protects the frescoes from the elements. Inside, the walls are entirely covered with frescoes by the local painter Minas, who practiced a folk Byzantine style. Particularly noteworthy is the depiction of the Archangel Michael, to whom the church is dedicated, as well as the cycle of the eleven major feasts. The church today primarily serves as a museum and monument, yet it retains its sacred aura and historical integrity. Visitors appreciate the intimacy of the space and the bustling colors of the paintings, which are over 500 years old. A visit gives deep insights into the rural piety and artistic wealth of late medieval Cyprus.
