Trooditissa Valley
The Trooditissa Valley is a deeply incised mountain ravine in the southern Troodos range, celebrated for its spectacular scenery and religious significance. Located at an elevation exceeding 1,200 meters, the valley is framed by steep, forested slopes dominated by black pine and cedar trees. It is home to the Trooditissa Monastery, founded in the 13th century, which remains a key pilgrimage site for those venerating its famous silver-plated icon of the Virgin Mary. Geologically, the valley sits at the junction of various igneous rocks within the island's ophiolite complex, resulting in a rugged and fractured topography. Nearby, the Trooditissa waterfall (also known as Chantara) cascades down the rocky terrain, fed by perennial mountain springs. The valley's cool microclimate makes it a preferred sanctuary from the summer heat of the coastal plains. Hiking routes through the valley provide intimate access to Cyprus's pristine alpine environments and diverse flora. Today, the Trooditissa Valley is a vital area for both ecotourism and the preservation of the island's spiritual and cultural heritage.
