The Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, meaning 'Saint Nicholas of the Roof,' is picturesquely located in the Troodos Mountains near the village of Kakopetria. It is the only surviving structure of an 11th-century Byzantine monastery and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. Its unique name refers to the steep-pitched wooden roof added in the 13th century over the original Byzantine cross-in-square design to protect the precious frescoes from heavy regional snowfall. The interior is almost entirely covered with magnificent frescoes spanning from the 11th to the 17th centuries, representing some of the most important examples of Byzantine art in Cyprus. The paintings depict biblical scenes, saints, and Christian festivals in a remarkable state of preservation. The architectural feature of the 'double roof' gives the church a distinctive, house-like appearance from the outside. Today, it stands as a significant pilgrimage site and a profound witness to the island's enduring monastic traditions.
