Troodos Plateau (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Troodos Plateau forms the central highlands of Cyprus and is the island's geological core. It is composed of the Troodos Ophiolite, a globally unique sequence of oceanic crust that emerged about 90 million years ago through tectonic uplift. The region hosts Mount Olympus, the highest point in Cyprus, and is characterized by dense forests of Calabrian pine and endemic Cyprus cedar. Historically, the plateau served as a strategic refuge, leading to the construction of numerous Byzantine monasteries, ten of which are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The cool mountain climate provides an important contrast to the heat of the coastal plains, making the plateau a hub for summer tourism and winter sports. The region's volcanic soils are also the basis for Cyprus's significant viticulture. As the island's most important water reservoir, the plateau feeds most of the country's major rivers and reservoirs through snowmelt and rainfall.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The central highland is typically reached by taking the main paved mountain roads ascending from all directions. Driving a reliable vehicle is generally the best way to access the highest elevations and central trailheads.
📅
Best season
Summer is highly popular for escaping the coastal heat, offering cool and refreshing mountain air. Winter often brings snow to the plateau, transforming it into a seasonal destination for winter walking and views.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The plateau features rugged, rocky landscapes interspersed with alpine-style pine forests and steep ridges. Trails can range from well-maintained, relatively flat paths to challenging, uneven rocky ascents towards the peaks.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality hiking boots and warm clothing layers are essential, as temperatures are noticeably lower here. During winter months, specialized snow gear or very warm waterproof clothing may be required for safe exploration.

Parking
Parking is usually available at the main central square of the Troodos region or near prominent trailheads. During peak summer weekends or snowy winter days, these parking areas can fill up quickly, so arrive early.
⚠️
Safety
Weather conditions at this altitude can change rapidly; always check the forecast before starting a hike. Stay well away from unprotected cliff edges, and be aware that winter conditions require extra caution on slippery trails.
