Kourion (Cyprus)

Weather…

Kourion was one of ancient Cyprus's most significant city-kingdoms, offering a profound look into the island's Roman and early Christian history. The centerpiece is the grand Greco-Roman theater, originally built in the 2nd century BC, which seats 3,500 spectators and is still used for performances today. From its tiers, visitors enjoy sweeping views over the Mediterranean and Episkopi Bay. Key structures include the House of Eustolios, a former private villa with exceptional 5th-century mosaic floors depicting Christian themes. The site also features the remains of an early Christian basilica, a Roman forum, and public baths. Evidence of the massive earthquake in 365 AD, which destroyed much of the city, is still visible throughout the excavations. Located 18 kilometers west of Limassol, Kourion is easily accessible by car or organized tours. Spring and late autumn are the best times to visit to avoid the intense summer heat. Visitors should wear sturdy walking shoes and bring water, as the site is extensive. The nearby Kourion beach, famous for its chalk cliffs and windsurfing, is an excellent post-sightseeing stop.
