💡 Tips
- The mountain roads are winding and steep; rent a car with a strong engine and plan for slower driving times than the map suggests.
- Temperatures here are significantly cooler than on the coast; bring a warm jacket, even in the middle of summer.
- To visit the famous painted Byzantine churches (UNESCO sites), check their specific opening hours in advance, as many are managed by local village priests.
- Gas stations are scarce in the high mountains; make sure your tank is full before starting your ascent.
- Modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is strictly enforced when entering the active Kykkos Monastery.

The Troodos Mountains form the imposing backbone of Cyprus, offering a refreshing escape from the summer heat of the coast. Here stands Mount Olympus, at 1,952 meters the highest point on the island, where snow often falls in winter, even allowing for skiing. The region is characterized by dense black pine forests, splashing waterfalls like Caledonia Falls, and photogenic wine villages such as Omodos or Kakopetria, known for their traditional architecture. Culturally, Troodos is of outstanding significance due to the ten Byzantine churches that are UNESCO World Heritage sites. These so-called 'barn-roofed churches' hide magnificent frescoes from the 11th to 16th centuries behind their simple exterior appearance. Kykkos Monastery, the richest and most lavish monastery on the island, is also a major pilgrimage site in these mountains. For active holidaymakers, Troodos provides a network of well-marked hiking trails, such as the Artemis or Atalante trails, providing spectacular views across the entire island to the sea. Access is via winding but well-maintained roads from Limassol or Nicosia. The best time to visit is spring for the lush flora or autumn for the grape harvest, while winter features a unique alpine experience in the Mediterranean.
