Županja is a town in eastern Croatia, situated on the left bank of the Sava River in the heart of the Slavonia region. The town holds a unique place in Croatian history as the birthplace of football and tennis in the country. In the late 19th century, English industrialists who managed local oak wood factories introduced these sports; the first football match was recorded here in 1880. A monument in the town square commemorates this athletic heritage. Županja is also a vital center for Slavonian folklore, hosting the annual 'Šokačko sijelo' festival since 1968, which celebrates the traditions, intricate costumes, and tamburitza music of the local Šokci people. Geographically, it serves as a key border crossing to Bosnia and Herzegovina and has historically relied on the Sava River for trade and transport. The town's urban layout features wide streets typical of Slavonian settlements. Today, Županja is an important industrial hub, most notably home to one of Croatia's largest sugar refineries, which has been operational since 1906.
