The island of Vir is one of the most visited destinations in the Zadar region. Thanks to the bridge connecting it to the mainland, it is exceptionally accessible, making it a favorite for families and those traveling by car. Vir is home to a diverse coastline extending over 30 kilometers, ranging from shallow sandy beaches to dramatic red rocky cliffs in the north. The island's landmark is the 17th-century Venetian fortress, Kaštelina, once used for defense against pirates and the Ottomans. Another natural wonder is the red rocks at Sapavac, which glow intensely red during sunset. The island is also known for its medicinal mud, often used to treat rheumatic conditions. Lush pine forests in the interior provide welcome shade during the hot summer months. Over the past few decades, Vir has evolved from a quiet fishing village into a bustling tourist hub. During summer, the 'Vir Summer Stage' hosts a rich program of concerts and festivals. Despite its popularity, secluded coves can still be found in the northwest, accessible only by foot or boat. Local cuisine features fresh seafood and regional lamb specialties. Vir serves as a convenient base for excursions to Zadar, the historic town of Nin, or the Paklenica and Kornati National Parks. Cycling is very popular on the island, with paths nearly encircling the entire landmass. With its mild Mediterranean climate and crystal-clear Adriatic waters, Vir is an excellent choice for a carefree beach holiday.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
