Vukovar Water Tower (Croatia)

Weather…

The Vukovar Water Tower is the most prominent symbol of the Croatian War of Independence and the city's heroic resistance during the 1991 siege. Completed in 1968 in the Najpar-bašča district, the 50-meter-tall structure was one of the largest water towers in Europe at the time. It originally served the municipal water supply and featured a panoramic restaurant at its summit. During the three-month siege of Vukovar, the tower was struck by more than 600 artillery shells but famously remained standing. Following the war, its damaged shell was intentionally preserved in its ruined state as a memorial to the suffering and courage of the local people. In 2020, the tower was structurally reinforced and reopened as a memorial center for visitors. An elevator now carries guests to the top, offering expansive views over the city, the Danube River, and across the border into Serbia.
