Trsat Castle (Croatia)

Weather…

Trsat Castle towers on a 138-meter-high hill overlooking the city of Rijeka, providing a strategic view of the Rječina canyon and the Kvarner Bay. The site originally held a Roman watchtower known as Tarsatica, but the current fortress structure primarily dates back to the 13th century when it was established by the Frankopan counts. For centuries, the castle served as a major defensive outpost against Ottoman expansion into the coastal regions. Following a severe earthquake in 1750, the castle fell into disrepair until it was purchased in 1826 by Count Laval Nugent, an Irish-born Austrian Field Marshal. He restored the ruins in a Neo-Gothic romantic style, converting the fortress into a palatial residence and a family mausoleum. Nugent also established one of the first museums in Croatia within its walls. Today, the architecture seamlessly blends medieval fortifications with 19th-century stylistic updates, making it one of Rijeka’s most iconic cultural symbols.
