Kastav is a pretty hilltop town situated 365 meters above the Kvarner Gulf in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Its history dates back to ancient times when it was a Liburnian settlement before coming under Roman rule. A significant legal milestone is the Statute of Kastav from 1400, which codified the social and legal norms of the municipality. For centuries, Kastav served as an essential religious and cultural center for Istria and the Croatian Littoral, anchored by the monumental Parish Church of St. Helen on the town's highest ridge. The medieval urban core, featuring defensive walls and nine towers, has been remarkably well-preserved. Geographically, Kastav features striking panoramic views of Rijeka, Opatija, and the islands of Krk and Cres. Today, the town is celebrated for its local 'Belica' wine, the 'Kastav Cultural Summer' festival, and the traditional 'Bela nedeja' autumn fair.
