Marčelji is located in the municipality of Viškovo, north of the port city of Rijeka. The settlement is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Kastavština region. Marčelji gained worldwide fame through the Halubajski Zvončari, carnival groups dressed in sheepskins and equipped with large bells who wander through the villages during the carnival season to drive away winter. This tradition is part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The village provides a quiet, rural atmosphere with traditional stone houses and gardens. In recent years, Marčelji has become a popular residential area for people working in Rijeka but wishing to live in the countryside. The surroundings are characterized by dense forests inviting visitors for hiking and mountain biking. From the surrounding hills, there is often a broad view over the Kvarner Bay. Visitors can explore the Heritage House (Zavičajna kuća), which documents the history and customs of the region. Local cuisine is characterized by simple dishes such as jota (stew made of sauerkraut and beans) and polenta. Marčelji is a well-suited place to experience the authentic culture of the Croatian coastal hinterland far from mass tourism.
