Preko is the administrative heart of Ugljan island, located just a quick ferry ride away from Zadar. Its name means 'across', referring to its position facing the city. A key landmark is the tiny islet of Galevac (Školjić), situated only 80 meters from the shore, which houses a 15th-century Franciscan monastery and a valuable library. Hikers should not miss the climb to St. Michael's Fortress (Sv. Mihovil), which provides the most spectacular view over the Zadar archipelago and the Kornati National Park. Preko's Jaz beach is one of the few sandy, shallow beaches in the region, making it very popular for families. The village features traditional Dalmatian stone architecture and a spirited waterfront (Riva) lined with cafes and seafood restaurants. Surrounded by ancient olive groves and pine forests, Preko is also a great destination for cycling and long walks along the coast.
