💡 Tips

  • The passenger ferry from Zadar's old town to Preko is very convenient for day trips, while car ferries depart from the Gaženica port.
  • The islet of Galevac is just 80 meters from Preko's shore. You can easily swim there or hire a small wooden boat.
  • Rent a bicycle near the ferry terminal; Ugljan is known as the 'green island' and has wonderful coastal cycling paths.
  • Hike up to the Fortress of Saint Michael (Sveti Mihovil). The trail is steep, but the panoramic view of the Zadar archipelago is spectacular.
  • Look for the small 'vrulje' (underwater springs) near the beaches, which make the sea water feel suddenly cooler.

Preko is the administrative heart of Ugljan island, located just a quick ferry ride away from Zadar. Its name means 'across', referring to its position facing the city. A key landmark is the tiny islet of Galevac (Školjić), situated only 80 meters from the shore, which houses a 15th-century Franciscan monastery and a valuable library. Hikers should not miss the climb to St. Michael's Fortress (Sv. Mihovil), which provides the most spectacular view over the Zadar archipelago and the Kornati National Park. Preko's Jaz beach is one of the few sandy, shallow beaches in the region, making it very popular for families. The village features traditional Dalmatian stone architecture and a spirited waterfront (Riva) lined with cafes and seafood restaurants.
