💡 Tips

  • The strong 'Bura' wind can blow suddenly; avoid parking under old trees or unstable structures when it picks up.
  • Pag Town was meticulously planned in the 15th century-take time to appreciate the exact geometric street grid off the main square.
  • Visit the salt pans (solana) early in the morning for the best light and to avoid the intense midday heat.
  • Many small stone alleys offer pleasant shade during summer afternoons, well-suited for a cooling walk.
  • Don't leave without tasting local sheep cheese directly from the producers in the town market or nearby farm stands.

The town of Pag, located on the island of the same name in Northern Dalmatia, is a masterpiece of late medieval urban planning. It was constructed in the 15th century based on designs by the renowned architect and sculptor Juraj Dalmatinac, following the abandonment of the original town site. The grid-like street layout with its perpendicular alleys and central square has remained perfectly preserved to this day. The Basilica of St. Mary on the main square is an outstanding example of the transitional style between Gothic and Renaissance. Pag is world-famous for its centuries-old tradition of lace-making, which is recognized as part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Another economic cornerstone is salt production in the extensive salterns, among the largest in Croatia. The island's barren, moon-like landscape, shaped by the fierce Bora wind, provides the town with a unique atmosphere. Today, Pag is not only a cultural hub but also a culinary hotspot, celebrated for its pungent Pag cheese (Paški sir) and aromatic lamb meat.
