Nerežišća is located at the intersection of main roads on Brač island, at the foot of Vidova gora hill. For centuries, from the Venetian period until the 19th century, this settlement was the island's capital, which is reflected in its impressive architecture. The townscape is defined by grand stone manor houses and narrow paved streets. Its inland location once provided protection from pirate raids. The most famous symbol of the village is the small chapel of St. Peter (Sv. Petar), on whose roof a small pine tree (borić) grows directly from the stone structure. This botanical and architectural phenomenon is one of the most photographed sights on Brač. The main Parish Church of Our Lady of Carmel is an outstanding example of Baroque architecture, featuring a valuable altarpiece and a monumental stone facade. Nerežišća is also known for its stonemasonry tradition; nearby are quarries where the famous white Brač stone is extracted. The surrounding area is good for hiking towards the Blaca Hermitage or the summit of Vidova gora (778 m), the highest point of all Adriatic islands. Gastronomically, the village is noted for lamb dishes and local cheese served in traditional konobas. A visit here features a deep look into authentic island life away from the coastal crowds.
