Vidova Gora (Croatia)

Weather…

Vidova Gora, located on the island of Brač, is the highest peak of all Adriatic islands, reaching an elevation of 778 meters above sea level. The mountain is predominantly composed of Mesozoic limestone, which forms a classic karst landscape featuring numerous caves and sinkholes typical of the Dalmatian coast. From its summit, visitors enjoy a spectacular view of the Golden Horn beach (Zlatni Rat) in Bol, as well as the islands of Hvar, Korčula, and Vis, with visibility occasionally stretching to Italy. The mountain was named after Saint Vitus (Sveti Vid), and the ruins of a 13th or 14th-century chapel dedicated to him can still be found on the plateau. The plateau of Vidova Gora is covered by dense forests of the endemic Dalmatian black pine (Pinus nigra dalmatica), which has adapted to the island's arid and rocky conditions. Nearby, the Dragon's Cave (Zmajeva špilja) serves as a historical monument, having sheltered Glagolitic monks in the 15th century who carved intricate reliefs into its walls. Today, Vidova Gora is a prime destination for hikers and mountain bikers, offering a unique blend of alpine-like vegetation and Mediterranean panoramas. The mountain also plays a central role in local pastoral culture, as the high plateau has been used for sheep farming for centuries.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The deeply impressive, highest peak of the Adriatic islands is accessible from the famous town of Bol either via a long, rather strenuous hiking trail or alternatively quite comfortably by vehicle over a barren but well-maintained mountain road from inland.
📅
Best season
The highly mild spring and the cool autumn are truly good for extended tours here, as the blistering midsummer heat can very quickly make the completely unshaded, continuous ascent directly from the coast extremely and utterly exhausting for absolutely anyone.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The highly popular footpath straight from Bol climbs steeply upwards over a continuously rising, dry, and heavily stony, rough path, whereas the broad summit plateau at the top is surprisingly flat and exceptionally easy to access even for casual walkers.
🎒
What to bring
For a genuinely sporting ascent entirely on foot, enormous amounts of drinking water, heavy sun protection, a solid hat, and truly sturdy footwear due to the vast loose scree on the path are absolutely and uncompromisingly indispensable for personal safety.
🅿️
Parking
For comfortable drivers, there are generally very ample parking facilities right in the immediate vicinity of the large summit cross, from where the fantastically wide view of the vast sea and Hvar can be enjoyed instantly and without any physical effort.
⚠️
Safety
At the very top main viewpoint, a securing railing is often entirely missing; visitors should therefore always keep an extremely strict distance from the steep, dropping cliff edge, especially when unexpected, highly violent wind gusts suddenly sweep off the sea.
⏱️
Time needed
Those bravely hiking directly from Bol generally need about two to three full hours for the highly sweaty, long ascent, while a pure visit by car, including taking multiple photos atop the broad plateau, is comfortably completed in barely half an hour.
