Mljet is one of the most fascinating islands in the Adriatic, renowned for its untouched nature and dense forests. The western part of the island was declared a National Park in 1960. The core of the park consists of the Great Lake (Veliko jezero) and the Small Lake (Malo jezero), connected to the sea by narrow channels. In the middle of the Great Lake lies St. Mary's Island, featuring a 12th-century Romanesque Benedictine monastery. Beyond the National Park, the island has hidden coves and caves, including the famous Odysseus Cave (Odisejeva špilja) near Babino Polje, where according to legend, the Greek hero spent seven years. The island is sparsely populated, making it an excellent retreat for hikers, cyclists, and peace seekers. Settlements like Pomena and Polače serve as gateways to the National Park. The flora is dominated by Aleppo pines and holm oaks, while the fauna was notably shaped by the introduction of mongooses in the early 20th century to combat snakes. Gastronomically, the island is famous for lobster and goat cheese. Mljet is accessible by ferry or catamaran from Dubrovnik or Prapratno on the Pelješac peninsula.
The most pleasant time to visit is May–Jul.
