Vela Luka is a prominent port town situated at the western end of Korčula Island, located at the head of a spectacular 9-kilometer-long bay that is among the best-protected natural harbors in the Adriatic. The town is a major cultural and economic hub, distinguished by its unique prehistoric heritage at the Vela Spila cave, an archaeological site of global importance featuring continuous human settlement layers dating back to the Palaeolithic era. Vela Luka is widely renowned for its exceptional olive oil, with local cooperatives producing some of the highest-rated extra virgin oils in the Mediterranean. Culturally, the town is synonymous with Dalmatian song and is the birthplace of the late music icon Oliver Dragojević, whose legacy is celebrated annually through festivals and a dedicated museum. The waterfront is lined with a pleasant mosaic of stone architecture and modern marinas, leading to the Kalos Medical Center, which utilizes local curative mud for health treatments. A short boat ride away lies the uninhabited islet of Proizd, famous for its blindingly white pebble beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters that attract nature lovers from around the world. As a vital ferry link connecting Korčula to Split and the island of Hvar, Vela Luka serves as the western gateway to the island, blending busy maritime activity with a serene island lifestyle.
