Goveđari was established in the 18th century by settlers brought in to manage the lands of the Benedictine monastery. Located within the heart of the Mljet National Park, it is the only village not situated directly on the shore, offering unique views of the island's lush forests. The stone houses are built close together, maintaining their original Mediterranean charm. From the village, several hiking trails lead down to the Great Lake (Veliko Jezero) and the Small Lake (Malo Jezero). The location is great for nature lovers seeking the quietude of the woods and the emerald waters of the park's lakes. Time seems to have slowed down here, making it a well-suited retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. The local architecture is a testament to the island's history and its integration with the protected natural landscape. Goveđari serves as a cultural hub within the park, where visitors can still find authentic island life. Staying here allows you to experience the national park in its most pristine state, surrounded by ancient trees and singing cicadas.
