Babino Polje is located in the central part of the island of Mljet, stretching picturesquely along the slopes of Mount Veliki Grad. As the administrative center of the island, the village has preserved its authentic character. Narrow streets and old stone houses tell of a long history closely linked to agriculture and olive oil production. The residents are proud of their traditions, reflected in local festivals and warm hospitality. The absolute highlight nearby is the Odysseus Cave (Odisejeva špilja) on the southern coast. According to legend, Odysseus was shipwrecked here and spent seven years with the nymph Calypso. The cave can be reached through a tunnel from the sea or via a steep path from the land. The play of sunlight on the blue water inside the cave is an unforgettable sight. In Babino Polje itself, the view over the green fields of the island to the sea provides a soothing backdrop. Culinary-wise, the village features the best of the island: top-quality olive oil, goat cheese, and homemade wine. Since Mljet is known for its untouched nature, visitors find an oasis of peace here. Babino Polje is a good base for exploring both the rugged southern coast and the Mljet National Park in the west of the island. Hiking trails connect the village with the island's highest peaks, offering sweeping panoramas over the Adriatic.
