💡 Tips
- The ferry to the island leaves regularly from Dubrovnik's Old Town port. The journey only takes 15 minutes.
- Keep your ferry ticket! It doubles as your island entrance fee and your return ticket.
- Do not miss the last ferry back to Dubrovnik. Overnight stays on the island are strictly forbidden.
- Wear water shoes. The 'beaches' are rocky and getting into the water can be tricky.
- For Game of Thrones fans, there's an exhibit in the Benedictine monastery with a replica of the Iron Throne, an excellent photo opportunity.

Lokrum is a lush nature reserve located just a 10-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik's Old Town. Its history began in 1023 with the establishment of a Benedictine monastery. According to legend, Richard the Lionheart found safety here after a shipwreck. Today, the monastery ruins host a Game of Thrones exhibit, featuring the official replica of the Iron Throne, as several scenes were filmed on the island. The island is famous for its Botanical Garden, housing exotic plants and a friendly population of peacocks, introduced in the 19th century by Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. A major natural attraction is the 'Dead Sea' (Mrtvo more), a small saltwater lake connected to the open sea via underwater passages, handy for a calm swim. Strict conservation rules prohibit staying overnight on the island, helping to preserve its magical atmosphere. Hiking trails lead up to Fort Royal, built by Napoleon's army at the island's highest point, offering the best vantage point for photographing Dubrovnik. Ferries run every 30 minutes from Dubrovnik’s Old Port during the tourist season. With its pine-shaded paths and rocky coves, Lokrum provides an excellent escape from the city heat. Visitors are advised to bring water and comfortable walking shoes for exploring the island’s diverse terrain.
