Lotrščak Tower (Croatia)

Weather…

The Lotrščak Tower is a prominent landmark located in the Upper Town (Gradec) of Zagreb, with historical origins dating back to the 13th century. It was originally built to guard the southern gate of the city walls and remains the best-preserved part of the medieval fortification system. The tower's name is derived from the Latin phrase for 'the bell of thieves,' referring to the bell that was rung every evening before the city gates were closed. It is internationally famous for the Grič cannon, which has been fired daily exactly at noon since January 1, 1877. This tradition was started to synchronize the clocks of the city's church bell ringers. Visitors can ascend the tower via a spiral staircase to reach an observation deck that provides a dramatic 360-degree view of Zagreb and the Medvednica mountain range. During the 19th century, the structure underwent neogothic renovations and was heightened by an additional floor. Situated next to the funicular station, the tower serves as a cultural gallery and a symbol of Zagreb's enduring history.
