Kalnik (Croatia)

Weather…

Kalnik is a mountain range in northern Croatia, situated at the junction of the Prigorje, Zagorje, and Podravina regions. Although its elevations are modest, with the highest peak, Vranilac, reaching 643 meters, the range is striking due to its jagged limestone ridges and strategic prominence. Perched on these rocks are the ruins of the Old Town of Kalnik, a 13th-century fortress that played a key role in defending the territory against the Mongol invasion. The mountain is now a premier destination for rock climbing in Croatia, offering numerous routes on the vertical faces below the summit. Botanically, Kalnik is significant as an island of mountain flora amidst the Pannonian Plain, hosting many rare orchid species. On clear days, the summit features panoramic views extending to Zagreb's Medvednica mountain and even as far as the Slovenian and Austrian Alps.
