💡 Tips

  • Spring and autumn are good for hiking and climbing to avoid the intense summer heat and the biggest crowds.
  • A daily park ticket is required. You can purchase it at the entrance in the town of Starigrad-Paklenica.
  • Bring plenty of water, especially in summer. There are few springs inside the canyon, and they can run dry.
  • Wear sturdy footwear. The karst terrain is uneven and sharp; flip-flops are dangerous.
  • The Manita Peć cave has limited opening hours that vary by season. Check the schedule at the park entrance before starting the 1.5-hour hike up to it.

🍽 Food

🍽
Fresh fish and seafood

Look for a 'Konoba' (traditional tavern) in the coastal town of Starigrad. They serve the catch of the day, often simply grilled with olive oil and garlic.

🍽
Lamb under the 'Peka'

A traditional Dalmatian dish where lamb (or octopus) with potatoes is slow-cooked under a metal bell covered in embers. Often needs to be ordered in advance.

🍽
Pag Cheese (Paški Sir)

A famous sheep's milk cheese from the nearby island of Pag. Buy it at local markets or ask for it as an appetizer in restaurants.

🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

🛍
Local Honey & Olive Oil

Small stalls along the main road in Starigrad often sell homemade honey (especially sage honey) and local olive oil.

🛍
Climbing Gear

As a climbing hub, Starigrad has several shops specializing in climbing equipment and outdoor apparel.

🧘
Mala Paklenica Canyon

This smaller canyon is much wilder and less crowded than Velika Paklenica. It is for experienced hikers seeking solitude.

🧘
Mountain Trails

Escape the crowds by taking one of the many trails leading to higher elevations off the main canyon path.

🧘
Starigrad Beach (off-season)

Visit the pebble beaches in the early morning or outside of peak season for a quiet view of the sea and the Velebit mountain.

Paklenica National Park covers 95 square kilometers in the southern part of the Velebit mountain range, situated directly above the Adriatic coast near Starigrad. Its primary attractions are the two monumental canyons, Velika (Big) and Mala (Small) Paklenica, carved into the limestone by millennia of erosion. The 400-meter-high Anića kuk rock face is the park's most famous icon, drawing climbers from all over the globe. Beyond extreme sports, the park features over 150 kilometers of marked hiking trails, ranging from easy valley walks to demanding treks up to peaks like Vaganski vrh (1757 m) and Sveto brdo. Dense black pine and beech forests provide habitat for diverse wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, and rare griffon vultures. A particular highlight is the Manita peć cave, known for its impressive stalactites and stalagmites, which is open to visitors in the summer. Historically intriguing are the 'Titov bunker' underground tunnels, built during the Cold War as a secret shelter and now housing a modern visitor center. The park is easily accessible via the coastal road from Zadar. The best time for climbers and hikers is spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October), as the summer months can be intensely hot on the rock faces. Staying in Starigrad provides direct access to the park entrance.
