Gospić is the administrative center of Lika-Senj County, located in the mountainous Lika region of central Croatia. The town's development accelerated during the 18th century when it became a key military and administrative hub within the Habsburg Military Frontier. Its urban layout still reflects this period, featuring neoclassical architecture and the Cathedral of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, constructed in 1780. Gospić is globally renowned for its association with Nikola Tesla, who was born in the nearby village of Smiljan in 1856 and attended secondary school in the town. Geographically, it sits at an elevation of 562 meters on the Novčica River, tucked away at the foot of the majestic Velebit mountain range. Today, the town serves as a gateway to the North Velebit National Park and is a center for forestry, agriculture, and increasing eco-tourism in the highland interior.
