Senj is a town of rugged beauty and heroic history. Squeezed between the deep blue sea and the steep slopes of the Velebit massif, Senj served as a strategic bulwark for centuries. Looming over the town is the Nehaj Fortress, a cubic masterpiece of defensive architecture completed in 1558. It was the stronghold of the Uskoks, legendary irregular soldiers who fought against both the Ottomans and the Venetians. The old town's narrow alleys and the Cathedral of the Assumption speak of a past reaching back to Roman times. Senj also holds a special place in Croatian literacy; in the 15th century, it housed one of the first Glagolitic printing presses in Southeastern Europe. The town is notorious for the Bura, a freezing, gale-force wind that can exceed 200 km/h, often coating the streets in salt spray during winter. For outdoor enthusiasts, Senj is the well-suited gateway to the untouched wilderness of the Northern Velebit National Park.
