Senj Hydroelectric Plant
The Senj Hydroelectric Plant is located in Sveti Juraj, south of the town of Senj, and serves as one of the most important generation units in the Croatian energy system. It utilizes the water resources of the Lika and Gacka rivers, which are directed through a complex system of tunnels and channels from the Velebit mountain hinterland towards the Adriatic Sea. The plant was commissioned in 1965 and features an installed capacity of approximately 216 megawatts. A unique aspect of this facility is the exploitation of the vast elevation difference of over 400 meters between the Lika plateau and the coastline, enabling highly efficient power production. The engine room is largely constructed underground within the rocky cliffs of the Velebit range to minimize the impact on the landscape. On average, the plant produces 1,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, significantly contributing to the national grid. In recent years, substantial investments have been made to modernize control systems and generating aggregates. The associated water management system includes the Kruščica reservoir, which acts as the primary storage for operational needs. The Senj plant is considered an engineering masterpiece of the mid-20th century.
