The town of Rab is one of the best-preserved medieval settlements in the Adriatic, located on a narrow peninsula. Its most striking feature is the four Romanesque bell towers that rise into the sky like the masts of a stone ship. Rab's history dates back to the Liburnian period, but the Romans granted it the honorary title 'Felix Arba' (Happy Rab). A walk through the Upper, Middle, and Lower streets reveals magnificent Gothic and Renaissance palaces, as well as numerous churches. A cultural highlight is the 'Rapska Fjera', Croatia's oldest medieval summer festival, when the town is transported back to the era of knights and craftsmen. Local legend has it that Saint Marinus, the founder of the state of San Marino, was a stonemason from Rab. Culinarically, one should not miss the Rab Cake (Rapska torta), whose recipe has been handed down since the visit of Pope Alexander III in 1177.
