Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary
The Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary was established in 2002 in the Lika region to provide a permanent home for orphaned brown bears. Located on the slopes of the Velebit mountain range, the center is managed almost exclusively by international volunteers dedicated to animal rehabilitation. The facility focuses on bear cubs that have lost their mothers and would be unable to survive independently in the wild. Beyond animal protection, the sanctuary serves as an important educational site for ecological sustainability and the preservation of Croatia's biodiversity. The bears live in large, naturalistic enclosures designed to replicate their native environment. This project has brought international recognition to the small village of Kuterevo and promotes a model for the peaceful coexistence of humans and large predators. Visitors can gain insights into the behavior of Ursus arctos and the ongoing efforts in wildlife conservation.
