The Nkayi Sugar Refinery, operated by SARIS-Congo (Société Agricole de Raffinage Industriel du Sucre), is the industrial backbone of the Bouenza Department. Since the mid-20th century, sugarcane grown on vast plantations in the fertile Niari Valley has been processed on-site into refined sugar. The company is the largest private employer in the country and fundamentally shapes the social and economic landscape of the city of Nkayi. Its production not only meets the domestic demand of the Republic of Congo but also yields significant exports to neighboring Central African nations. In recent decades, the facility has been modernized to enhance energy efficiency, notably by utilizing bagasse, a byproduct of sugar processing, for electricity generation. Nevertheless, the refinery faces ongoing challenges from international competition and the pressure to adopt more sustainable agricultural practices.

What is this place?
The Nkayi Sugar Refinery is the hub of the Congolese sugar industry, operated by SARIS-Congo in the fertile Bouenza region. It processes sugar cane from the surrounding plantations into raw sugar, which is both consumed locally and exported.
Visiting
The refinery is an industrial facility and is normally not open to the public. Occasionally, however, guided tours for groups are offered, which one should inquire about on-site.
Where to view it
From the access road to the factory, one has a good view of the white silos and smoking chimneys. A higher point on the hill behind the facility provides a panoramic view of the entire factory complex and the surrounding fields.
Local products
The main product is raw sugar in various grades, packed in bags. By-products include molasses and bagasse (fibrous waste), which are often used for energy generation or as animal feed.
Active season
The refinery operates at full capacity during the entire sugar cane harvest season from June to October. Outside this season, production is usually lower, but the facility runs year-round for maintenance and processing of remaining stocks.
