Nkayi, formerly known as Jacob, is the fourth-largest city in the Republic of the Congo and the primary industrial hub of the Bouenza Department. Located in a fertile river plain, the city is famous for its sugar industry, dominated by the SARIS-Congo company (formerly SIACONGO). Since its establishment during the colonial era, Nkayi has grown into a major production center, leveraging the vast sugarcane plantations that surround the urban area. Its position on the Congo-Ocean Railway (CFCO) facilitates the efficient transport of industrial goods to the port of Pointe-Noire for export. In addition to sugar, the region is a producer of groundnuts and livestock, making Nkayi a vital agricultural trading post. The city features a grid-like street layout and has a rapidly growing population largely employed in the agro-industrial sector. Despite its industrial character, Nkayi remains deeply connected to the regional traditions and culture of the Niari Basin.
