San Gil
San Gil, also located in the Santander department, is the Mecca for adrenaline junkies in South America. The city itself is a bustling commercial hub with a lovely central park (Parque Galleral) where old trees provide shade. But the real reason for a visit lies in the spectacular valleys and rivers of the surrounding area. Tourists flock to San Gil to test their limits whitewater rafting on the Río Fonce or the raging Río Suárez, paragliding over the Chicamocha Canyon, or braving a bungee jump. The natural scenery is dramatic and diverse. Aside from extreme sports, the area features fantastic caves (like the Cueva del Indio), sweeping waterfalls (such as the Cascadas de Juan Curí), and challenging hiking routes in the nearby Parque Nacional del Chicamocha. Culinarily, San Gil shares the traditional dishes of the Santander region: Arepa Santandereana, Mute (a hearty soup), and here too you can find roasted giant ants for courageous foodies. San Gil is located on the main road connecting Bogotá with Bucaramanga and is easily accessible by long-distance bus (approx. 6-7 hours from Bogotá). Because there are so many outdoor activities in the region, the dry season (December to March and June to August) is the safest choice for a visit, as water levels for rafting are more predictable and hiking trails are dry.
